BRITTEN: War Requiem
In 1940, German bombs fell over Coventry, England, and destroyed a cathedral that had stood since before the Wars of the Roses. Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem marked the 1962 dedication of a new cathedral built next to the ruins of the old. This mournful, subtle, complex work combines the traditional requiem text with the words of war poet Wilfred Owen.
